Wat? Het blog Brain Pickings, dat zichzelf als volgt omschrijft:

Brain Pickings is a human-powered discovery engine for interestingness, a subjective lens on what matters in the world and why, bringing you things you didn’t know you were interested in — until you are.

Nogal een statement, ware het niet dat oprichter Maria Popova dit dagelijks waarmaakt. Zij is dé online curator achter Brain Pickings die blogt over alles wat je altijd wilde weten. Van wetenschap tot kunst, van literatuur tot natuurkunde en alles daartussenin: Maria schrijft en linkt en verwijst naar datgene waarvan zij denkt dat jij het wil weten (en dat wil je). En ze doet dat dus al zeven jaar met succes. Hieronder beschrijft ze hoe ze ooit begon:

On October 23, 2006, I sent a short email to a few friends at work — one of the four jobs I held while paying my way through college — with the subject line “brain pickings,” announcing my intention to start a weekly digest featuring five stimulating things to learn about each week, from a breakthrough in neuroscience to a timeless piece of poetry. “It should take no more than 4 minutes (hopefully much less) to read,” I promised. This was the inception of Brain Pickings.

In een interview met The Guardian uit 2012 pleit Popova voor meer offline zoektochten, als tegengif voor de wijdverbreide gedachte dat als het niet gegoogled kan worden, het niet bestaat.

If something interests me and is both timeless and timely, I write about it. Much of what is published online is content designed to be dead within hours, so I find most of my material offline. I gravitate more and more towards historical things that are somewhat obscure and yet timely in their sensibility and message. We really need an antidote to this culture of “if it’s not Google-able, it doesn’t exist”. There’s a wealth of knowledge and inspiration offline, ideas still very relevant and interesting.
